Sues Committee Meeting: 06/05/19

The next SUES meeting will be held on Friday 26th July at 2pm. Peter Firth will give a talk on Martin Luther.

It was agreed that the proposal to commission a programme for 2019-20 from the University of Liverpool Continuing Education department should be accepted. The payment of £4500 was authorized. At the end of the programme its cost effectiveness will be evaluated before proceeding to another year. John Sharp will communicate this decision to UL/CE.

Three seven session courses are proposed:

Autumn    Peter Firth        The Reformation in Europe

Winter        Roger Mitchell        The Victorian Country House

Spring        Alan Potter        The Human Brain

Course leaders will provide John Sharp with 5-10 line summaries of their courses for the purpose of advertising them. The committee will look for local means of advertising as well as relying on UL/CE.

Lecturers for four single day events will be recruited by Hazel Fort from lists provided by UL/CE and from members’ suggestions.

All events will take place at All Saints Church Hall, Park Road, Southport. Hazel Fort will negotiate with the venue and final contractual arrangements will be made by UL/CE.

The following dates were proposed:

Autumn 7 session course (10.30 am)        Sept 30, Oct 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov 4, 11

Winter 7 session course (10.30 am)        Jan 20, 27 Feb 3, 10, 17, 24, Mar 2

Spring 7 session course (10.30 am)        Apr 27, May 4, 11, 18, 25, Jun 1, 8 (as amended)

Single session events (2 pm)            Nov 22, Jan 10, Mar 6, Jun 5

An opportunity will be found at the single day events to give a ‘taster’ of the forthcoming 7 session courses.

From September 1 a subscription of £5 becomes due. This will provide access to the single session events and SUES newsletters, and entitlement to enrol for the 7 session courses at a fee of £35 for each course. Applications will be made to John Sharp, who will maintain records. Those on the existing contact list will be given the options of: receiving information by email, continuing to receive information by post or removal from the list.

Alan Potter will present proposals for research into learning, which will accompany the programme.

Peter Firth and Roger Mitchell will advertise the SUES programme with their existing course members.

It was agreed in principle that SUES should acquire a laptop to match in with the projector and which would also store SUES records. John Sharp and Alan Potter will look into this.

The next committee meeting will be held at 51 Rawlinson Road on June 17 at 2pm.
